What is Tai Chi?
Open to SASC members only! Tai chi is a popular exercise that utilizes slow and sequential body patterns combined with relaxing breathing exercises. While it is a great fitness regimen for all ages, it can be especially helpful for seniors by reducing the risk of dementia, depression, and seniors falling down.
instructor Garrett Chinn
Garrett started teaching Tai Chi in San Francisco to seniors and the disabled in 1981. He has taught classes at over 60 facilities providing services to seniors during his career. It was highlighted with the creation of the Tai Chi program in the Older Adults Dept. at City College of San Francisco, one of the largest programs of its kind in the country. When teaching concurrently at SRJC, over 500 students attended his classes weekly.
His classes have alleviated most of the common ailments related to the aging process. Students have reported feeling comfortable and safe in his classes where students’ capabilities range from seated participation to vigorous, traditional Tai Chi training.
Retired from teaching for 33 years with the Community College system in 2019, Garrett is looking forward to walking 5 minutes to the Center to share his Tai Chi knowledge and experiences to complement any past Tai Chi practices and/or to improve various aspects of your life through principled practice of Tai Chi Chuan.
