Fall Prevention
At the Sebastopol Area Senior Center, we are dedicated to empowering seniors and fostering active, healthy lifestyles. One of our most impactful initiatives is our fall prevention program, aimed at reducing the risk of falls and promoting well-being across our community. Falls affect each and every one of us in some way, whether it’s a parent, loved one, neighbor.
Our comprehensive efforts include:
- Evidence-based balance classes
- Bi-annual lecture series on fall prevention
- Fall risk screenings
- Medical foot care
- Tai Chi and other fitness programs
- Partnerships with the Sonoma County Area Agency on Aging for the Matter of Balance Program
Stay Active & Independent for Life (SAIL)
We offer SAIL classes both in person and virtual, to meet the needs of almost all physical abilities.
Students interested in joining any of our in-person SAIL classes must complete an assessment before enrolling.

Our efforts are guided by the SASC Health Advisory Committee, a team of dedicated local medical professionals who share a passion for keeping seniors healthy, happy, and mobile. Members include Sandra Bodley, Sally Gallo, John Johnson, Allan Bernstein, Annette Shearer, and Mitch Savitsky. Together, they champion innovative strategies to support seniors in living independently and safely for as long as possible.

Falls are a serious threat to older adults, affecting millions each year. One in four seniors falls annually, doubling their risk of falling again.
The consequences can be severe—one in five falls causes serious injuries, leading to over 3 million ER visits and 300,000 hip fractures yearly.
Falls are also the leading cause of traumatic brain injuries (TBI) and cost over $50 billion annually, with Medicare and Medicaid covering most of the expenses.
Understanding the risks and taking preventive steps can help protect independence and well-being.
